Normally, this would be madness to have everything in white, especially, as we had planned to rent out our villa when we were not there. However, it was important to us that we had a home we felt we could live in and not a show piece or a “anything-will-do” approach to furnishing our villa. We wanted to emphasise the views and not have the furniture kill them, as we believe would have been the case if we had accepted the developers furniture package, which was all in dark brown!
With white in mind, we started organising our furniture. We visited furniture showrooms in Hong Kong and had a lot of help from our friends who own Le Cadre Gallery in Central, which we think is the best furniture design shop in Hong Kong. In the end, as well as purchasing new pieces, we decided we would take some of the furniture we had at home, purchases we had made years ago from Le Cadre Gallery, but which were now design classics.
This is our dining table and the chairs that surround it are made by Driade and, although they may look hard, they are incredibly comfortable. We have sat for hours on them and never once felt like moving. We hang around a lot at this table as it has an indoor/outdoor feel when all the sliding doors are open on both sides of the living/dining pavilion.
I love this lamp, it is a design classic. It is an uplight that is divided into two parts - you can light each section separately by touching either of the buttons on the floor. This is our living area and the focus is towards the large B&O television in the corner. The position of the sofa was intentional as we wanted to appreciate its fine curved back.
The sofa seats three to four people and is wonderfully comfortable and the prefect place to take in the view during the day and, at night to relax and watch your favourite movie on the 40” Bang & Olufsen television or drop-off to sleep. In the living area is a white wall cabinet. This cabinet is resting on perspex stands and has florescent tubes built into it. At night time it looks as if it is suspended off the ground and provides a great backlight to this side of the room. In the wall cabinet we store our glasses, movie DVD’s and music CD’s.
Lights are very important to us as they set the ambience of a room. There are two articulated halogen lamps in the guest suite either side of the king size bed. These are great for reading at night as they can be set at any angle. Also, seen in the photograph are two low bedside tables covered in leather.
This room is the third bedroom. It is such a lovely room with a great view across the terrace to the pool and the sea beyond, so we didn’t want to spoil it by putting two single beds into it, which would mean you only used it to sleep in. It has become our day room, a place to escape the midday sun and take a nap or read. At night the lounger can be laid flat and it becomes a queen size bed.
This is the view looking into the guest suite beneath the master bedroom. The view from these chairs is picturesque and tranquil and a great place to sit in the morning eating breakfast or catching up on your e-mails. If you feel like reclining and don’t want to do that on the bed, then you can lay down on the burgundy coloured B&B chaise. Great for reading, taking a nap or just staring at the view.
This is the king size bed in the master bedroom and it has a rather beautiful hand-made Indian bed cover with a pattern on it made of fine gold coloured wire. Also in this bedroom are two Louis XVl style French dining chairs. The master bedroom leads out onto a large balcony which has a splendid view of the sea and a distant view of the south east part of Koh Samui. Here you can sit on comfortable cane armchairs and read the morning papers with your tea or coffee.
