For a small island, there is an amazing amount of choice of both Thai and international cuisine, some are as good as you would expect to find in any world city.
If you are on holiday and do not want to spend time seeking out the picturesque restaurant overlooking the cliff, or the little bar tucked away from the tourist throngs, then this is the guide for you.
What I am recommending are our personal favourites and those of our friends who visit and live on Samui.
They may not be to everyone’s liking for different reasons. For the full list of restaurants and bars you need to look at the many food and bar guides that already exist on the island and these can be found in most hotels and restaurants. It should be noted however, that we are not aware of any independent food and bar guides. Restaurants and bars pay to be included in the Koh Samui guides and directories.
To help you evaluate the restaurants before you go, important if you are only visiting for a short holiday, we have developed a point system, something you won’t see in other guides on the island. The point system is applied to all restaurants that we have personally visited and eaten at in the past year. Otherwise, they are not rated.
We try to visit all restaurants recommended to us by friends who work and live on Samui as well as friends and visitors who come to the island regularly.
For each restaurant rated we have given it a score out of 10 for FOOD and PRESENTATION, represented by the knife and fork icon, a score out of 10 for SERVICE (including whether or not you are greeted by the Owner or Executive Chef), represented by the special service icon and a score out of 10 for DECOR, AMBIENCE and SCENIC VIEWS, if any, represented by the landscape icon.
Rating for ALL categories are out of 10:
Outstanding 10
Excellent 9-8
Very Good 7-6
Good 5
Satisfactory 4
For a restaurant to attain 10 points it would have to have maintained the score of 9 for at least 1 year.
For restaurants that have been recommended by others but have not been rated yet I have put TBR (To Be Rated) against the name.
I haven’t mentioned value for money or given an indication of the cost of a meal.
I believe you can have a good or bad meal irrespective of how much you pay.
However, expect to pay anywhere between 350 baht to 1,200 baht per head for food depending on how many dishes you have in the restaurants we have recommended. If you have fresh fish and lobster you will pay the market price per 100 grams. Wine will increase the cost considerably as there is a very high taxation on wine in Thailand.
Consistency is important, especially, when one is a regular Samui visitor or resident. Restaurants and particularly Executive Chefs come and go, so here are our long staying favourites guaranteed to be there the next time you visit...fingers crossed!
This guide is by no means complete and we will be adding to it over time as we discover those that are new and those that we missed out on before.
We welcome your comments and recommendations. Cheers and Bon Appetit.
