The rumours about the development started a chain reaction. Firstly, the Chairman of RDI visited Hong Kong to reassure the owners that all was well and, secondly, I was commissioned to shoot another video to show that construction was well under way.
When I was eventually given the go-ahead to film, some six months later, construction on the site was indeed well under way. Obviously, the developer was taking no chances this time round.
The pictures tell it all, construction is happening all over the site. My video toured the property exhibition circuit and was, I am told, a great success, leading in some cases to the sale of villas, but I still haven’t heard from the Oscar committee yet!
This is a transcript of the interview with the Director of Design and Development, Richard Manser, which I filmed for my second video report in August 2004.

AR: Richard, what stage is the site at now?
RM: Currently we are doing construction on phase one starting at villa 32 on the beach, across the beach to villa 34, up the main spine to the central facilities and across the first section of the A type villas finishing at villa number 7.
RM: Hey, that’s correct Adrian. We currently have around 200, 250 workers on site. We‘ve started in a number of locations so that we can put the correct amount of workers in the positions. What we will find over the next few months is that all the pockets start to join together and we see the complete L shape of the phase one construction.
AR: I notice round the site that there are sort of pockets of building activity happening all over the site. What’s the reasoning behind all this?
AR: I can see the first villa in phase one is actually well under way and heading towards completion soon. Why are you completing that villa first?
T/C 00.11.00.13
RM: We are doing one villa first Adrian. What that does for us? It helps us resolve any small construction issues that we may have, it also helps us in our final selection and detailing of all the finishes, making sure we get the power points in exactly the right locations, the light switches exactly where they should be, so that then we can use that philosophy for all the villas and we don’t wind up perpetuating mistakes throughout the site.

AR: Fantastic. Richard what can I expect to see when I come back in three months?
T/C 00.11.41.09
RM: When you come back in three months time Adrian you should expect to see the first of the A type villas complete. We should be able to walk you through the inside and show you the finishes, the fixtures and give you a really good idea as to how the whole project is going to look.
AR: Fantastic. I look forward to seeing you in three months time.

This is the main pathway or spine that Richard Manser mentioned in his interview. This pathway, which will turn into a buggy path, leads from the beach and, where you can see the crane, the restaurant will be built and then leads to the main facilities area at the top of the development. In this area, there will be the administration, housekeeping and a large sound proof room which will house the back-up generator. Also, this is where the reception area and parking bays will be.
A cement bucket in action. The construction site needed so much cement that Kalkin had to make all the cement on site and build a cement silo to store it all. This also saved a lot of time and did not clog-up the construction site with cement trucks constantly coming and going.
This was the villa that Richard spoke about that would be completed first. It would become the template for all the other villas on the site. As well as the interior finish, it is important to see the overall affect, for example, the tiles and flooring that they will have in the space. In this picture, you can see the wooden structure of the villa balcony outside the master bedroom.
Here you can see the construction of the reinforced concrete walls for one of the villas. The construction quality was at a level you would expect to find in the UK and Australia. It might not look much, but if you get the mix of the cement wrong or do not put enough wire into the concrete for reinforcing then the cement could crumble over the years.
Our villa, villa 14, rising from the ground. We still have the fabulous view and you can see the outline of the swimming pool in concrete in the background. Our villa was built on two levels and what you can see in this picture is the ground level where the living/dining pavilion, the master bedroom and the third bedroom will be built. Beside the sala, which will be positioned next to the swimming pool, will be stairs leading down to the guest suite and a small garden.
